March 30, 1956 – June 18, 2026
"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23

With profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the life and legacy of Sister Avril "ABD" Mainer, who peacefully answered the Master's call and transitioned from labor to reward on Thursday, June 18, 2026.

Sister Avril Anita Beatrice Mainer was born on March 30, 1956, in Bastrop, Louisiana, to the late Presiding Elder John A. Mainer and Mother Willie S. Mainer. As the firstborn child, Avril embraced leadership, responsibility, and compassion from an early age. Affectionately known as "ABD," she was loved by family, friends, church members, students, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As a preacher's daughter, or "P.K." (Preacher's Kid), Avril was raised in the rich traditions of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Her father faithfully served as pastor in numerous congregations throughout the A.M.E. denomination, establishing a spiritual foundation that would guide her throughout her life. At an early age, Avril accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior and remained steadfast in her faith until the very end.

Education was both her passion and her calling. Avril attended U.B. Kinsey Elementary School and Roosevelt Middle School before graduating from Miami Edison Senior High School in Miami, Florida. In 1975, she became a licensed cosmetologist through studies at Miami Northwestern Senior High School. Never content to stop learning, she continued her education at Miami Dade Community College, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree. She later received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, with specialties in ESOL and Reading Endorsement.

Avril devoted her professional life to educating and inspiring young people through the Miami-Dade County Public School System. Beginning as a substitute teacher and later becoming a classroom educator, she served students and families at numerous schools, including Westview Middle School, Little River Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Elementary, Brentwood Elementary, Fine Byrd Fischer Elementary, Madi Ives Elementary, Kinloch Elementary, and ultimately Henry E. S. Reeves Elementary School, from which she retired in 2013.

To Avril, teaching was far more than a profession—it was a ministry. She believed every child deserved encouragement, opportunity, and someone who believed in their potential. Her impact extended far beyond the classroom walls and continues to live on through the countless students whose lives she helped shape.

Her commitment to service also flourished within the church she loved. Avril faithfully served at Mount Hermon A.M.E. Church in Miami Gardens, Florida, under the leadership of Rev. Henry E. Green, Jr., where she served on the Stewardess Board and Usher Board.

In 2012, on Easter Sunday, Avril became one of the veteran members of The Immanuel Temple A.M.E. Church. There she faithfully served as Local President of the Willie E. S. Mainer Women's Missionary Society and as an Intercessor on the Intercessory Prayer Team. Her dedication to prayer, missions, and service reflected her unwavering love for God and His people.

Following her relocation to Houston, Texas, in February 2023, God once again ordered her steps. Through friendships formed during the Women's Missionary Quadrennial in Orlando, Florida, Avril found a church home at Wesley A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Rev. John F. White II. Even while facing health challenges, she continued serving faithfully on the Stewardess Board and Usher Board, demonstrating her lifelong commitment to ministry and service.

In addition to her work in education and ministry, Avril served as a District Leader for Primerica Financial Services, where she mentored and encouraged others toward financial literacy, personal development, and self-sufficiency.

Those who knew Avril knew a woman of unwavering faith, wisdom, generosity, strength, and love. She was a prayer warrior, a mentor, a confidante, and a devoted servant of God. She celebrated others' accomplishments with genuine joy and inspired countless individuals to pursue education, excellence, and faith.

She was especially proud of her family and never missed an opportunity to encourage those she loved. Whether offering wisdom, prayer, support, or simply a listening ear, Avril's presence brought comfort and strength to those around her. Her life was a reflection of God's grace, and her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched.

Cherishing Her Precious Memory are her devoted mother, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, Godbrother, Godsisters, special friends, a host of nieces and nephews, along with many other loving family members and friends.to include her church families of The Immanuel Temple A.M.E. Church and Wesley A.M.E. Church, former students, colleagues, fellow educators, missionary sisters, and countless cousins and friends throughout the United States, the Bahamas, and beyond.

A Legacy That Lives On
Sister Avril's life was a testament to faith, service, education, leadership, and love. She was a devoted daughter. She was a sister. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was an educator. She was a missionary. She was a prayer warrior.
