Barbara Ann
Poitier
Dec 6, 1948 — Jan 25, 2025
Barbara Ann Poitier, lovingly known by family and friends as "Queen B" or "Barb Ann" was born on December 6, 1948 in Waycross, Georgia to her late parents Mr. Martin and Louise Maultsby. She was the third eldest of eight children born from this blessed union. From a young age, Queen B was described as vibrant yet quiet, shy yet wise, and always full of love and life. Her beauty radiated from the inside out, and she carried a bright future ahead of her.
During her childhood, the Maultsby family relocated from Georgia to Miami, Florida, settling in the historic Black neighborhood of Overtown. There, Queen B continued her education in the Miami-Dade Public School system, graduating with her diploma from Booker T. Washington Senior High School in 1966.In 1964, at the tender age of 16, Queen B met Cyril Poitier Jr & on December 10, 1970, they were united in holy matrimony. From this beautiful union, they built a family, welcoming four wonderful children: Derrick, Delshawn, Cyril III, and Shelton Poitier. There was no greater joy in Queen B's life than becoming a mother. She embraced motherhood with unwavering devotion, creating a home filled with love, warmth, and faith. As her family grew, so did her aspirations.
With a heart for service, Queen B furthered her education and pursued a career in nursing, ultimately becoming a registered traveling nurse—a profession that would take her across the country and the world. Through her work, she formed deep friendships, gained invaluable experiences, and provided care to those in need with a compassionate spirit. Among the many places she traveled, New Jersey always held a special place in her heart. In 1991, Queen B took her faith to new heights when she was ordained as a Missionary under the leadership of Overseer Pastor E-Thel Mitchell of Family of the Living God, Inc. Her love for worship was evident in every prayer she spoke and every song she sang—her voice was like that of an angel. She found joy in ministering, singing, and uplifting others.
Queen B fully dedicated herself to missionary work and became a spiritual advisor, touching countless lives with her wisdom, faith, and unwavering love. Despite the opportunities that took her far and wide, Queen B felt the call to return home to Miami, where she continued her career while making countless sacrifices to nurture her growing family. In 2009, she retired from her lifelong career as a nurse. Yet, nothing compared to the role she cherished most—being a grandmother. Queen B was the epitome of a devoted grandmother, never missing a milestone: graduations, birthdays, honor roll ceremonies, and every special moment in between. Her family gatherings were legendary, filled with laughter, love, and delicious deserts like her famous banana and bread pudding.
Most importantly, they were rooted in faith, as she used every opportunity to impart the teachings of God's word. Beyond her service and faith, Queen B had a zest for life. She loved playing cards with family during the holidays, traveling, dining out, solving word puzzles, watching movies, singing Gospel music, writing heartfelt letters and poetry, phone conversations, fellowshipping with saints in her community and reading God's word. Her laughter was contagious, her hugs were warm, and her presence was a source of comfort and strength. On January 25, 2025, Queen B heard the voice of our Heavenly Father say: "Well done, thy good and faithful servant."
Her prayers, her wisdom, her courage, her discipline, her radiant smile, and the precious memories she created will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
