Obituary

Betty D. Walker was born to Frank and Hermie Dwight on June 1, 1940, in Miami, Florida. She began her educational journey at Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School and graduated from Miami Northwestern Senior High School in 1956. Betty continued her studies at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA. Later, she ventured to New York City, where she pursued a successful professional modeling career and worked on the New York Stock Exchange floor on Wall Street. On June 17, 1970, she married Charles C. Walker. This union brought forth the blessing of two beautiful daughters, Christal Hermie Walker and Betty Jean Walker, her namesake.Betty dedicated herself not only to her family but also to serving her community.

She forged a remarkable career in Housing and Housing Services, advocating for the disadvantaged and the elderly and leaving an indelible impact on the South Florida area. As Executive Director of Model City Development Corporation (MCDC), later Home & Housing of Dade County, she tirelessly worked to ensure that affordable housing was available to those of low-incomes and the elderly from North Miami to Homestead for over 40 years.Even in semi-retirement, Betty's passion for helping others persisted. One of her greatest joys was preparing and distributing Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for those in need. Her compassion knew no bounds, and she touched the lives of many with her kindness and generosity. She took flight on May 22, 2024, and heard the Lord's voice say come, take your rest.
