Dorothy S
Green
d. Jan 18, 2024
Dorothy S. Green was born on November 7, 1929, in Russellville, AL to the late Albert and Nancy Scott. She was the seventh of 15 children born to this union. She was raised and educated in Russellville, graduating from Reed Town High School in 1948.In April of 1950, Dorothy married Edward Green and they moved to Miami, FL. To this union, three beautiful daughters were born. In July of 2000 they celebrated 50 years of marriage by renewing their vows.
Upon moving to Miami, Dorothy and Edward joined St. James AME Church in Liberty City, FL and she served as an Usher and Stewardess. Later they moved their membership to Mt. Hermon AME Church in Opa-Locka, FL and she continued her service in the same capacities. Although not a member of the Missionary Society, she worked closely with her mother-in-law, Hattie Green, (which the society was named in honor) for its Annual Rainbow Tea. Upon retirement in 1989, they moved back to Russellville and joined St. Paul CME Church, and again she served in the same capacities.
Due to health reasons, Dorothy relocated to Houston, TX in 2017 but returned to Russellville in 2021.Early in her career, Dorothy worked as a housekeeper. She later attended beauty school and became a licensed shampoo attendant in 1970's. She worked at Hillcrest Beauty Salon until she retired in 1989.Dorothy knew how to sew. She made clothes for her daughters and taught them how to sew. She was also a great cook. Every Christmas, she would bake dozens of chocolate chip cookies and mail them to each of her children. For church fundraisers, she would sell her famous corn dogs and fried fish. She loved her grandchildren and loved the times when they were all together. She would offer a home remedy for illnesses (a trait from her mother). She was a prankster and would get the biggest kick from playing practical jokes. Each week, she would make the programs for Sunday Service.
She took pride in her appearance and was sure to look her best when she left the home. She was afraid of cats, but not of snakes.
She leaves to cherish her memories three daughters: Linda Symonette (Charles); Carolyn Britton (Rev. Ronnie); and Carla Green; six grandchildren, Edward J. Green, Mia Day (Mark), Jessica Anthony (Akiem), Jaleesa Henley, Andrea Britton, Lauren Caples (Delvin), Briana Britton; eleven great-grandchildren: Jeremiah Green, Amir Anthony, Zion Johnson, Maliq Chisolm, Eli Day, Easton Day, Emerson Day, Christian Johnson, Jr., Javeria Green, Malachi Green and Cairo Anthony; three sisters: Mary Catherine Scott, of Florence, AL; Ethel Phillips of Seattle, WA; Hattie Grace Scott of Rochester, NY; an adopted son, Allen Rorer of Russellville, AL.; and a host of loving and devoted family members and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; siblings: Issac Scott, Jacob Scott, Mary Smith, Mable Carter, Eunice Willingham, Joe Scott, Fletcher Scott, Alfred Scott, Minnie Frances Scott, Josephine Scott, and Carolyn Cleveland.
