George Michael Baker
Deacon George Michael Baker, a pillar of strength and kindness, graced this world on October 8, 1948, in the vibrant heart of Historic Overtown, in Miami, Florida. George was the fifth of 6 sons born to the loving embrace of Lenzy and Lokellow Baker.

As a toddler, George moved with his family to Bunche Park, where he made cherished memories with his brothers, cousins, childhood friends and neighbors.

Educated within the Miami-Dade County Public School System, George's journey of learning traversed Bunche Park Elementary and North Dade Junior Senior High. In 1967, George graduated from Miami Carol City Senior High School. Fueling his thirst for knowledge, George pursued higher education at Miami-Dade Community College, earning an Associate of Science Degree, before expanding his horizons at Florida International University.

From a tender age, George began helping his family, diving into odd jobs and later embarking on a dedicated 29-year tenure with the International Longshoreman Association (Local 1416), at the Port of Miami. Additionally, George's entrepreneurial spirit thrived as he established a lawn maintenance service, serving the community he cherished.

After a year-long courtship, George embarked on the sacred journey of marriage, on October 15, 1977. He joined hands with Linda Sharon Sumner in holy matrimony, enjoying a 46-year union. Together, they nurtured a legacy of love and devotion, blessed with the gift of two beloved daughters, Giorgina "Gina" Michelle Baker and Eunicia "Niecy" LaKelle Baker.

A man of unwavering devotion to his family, George epitomized dependability and generosity, always extending a helping hand with a balanced perspective, keen problem-solving skills and a remarkable sense of humor. A consummate storyteller, he captivated all who listened, punctuated by his infectious laughter and warmth.

George's passions were as diverse as they were profound—whether exploring the realms of travel, cooking, or the boundless wonders of science fiction stories on TV and film, he found solace and joy in every endeavor. An avid Trekkie, his love for the cosmos knew no bounds.

Above all, Deacon George Baker's heart belonged to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. George joined Greater New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church on February 21, 1993, and was baptized on March 7th of the same year. He was ordained as a Deacon on March 30, 1999. With great passion and faithfulness, George also participated in the Laymen Ministry as an Assistant Servant Leader. He also served in the Christian Education Ministry as a Sunday School Teacher. George cherished his church family at Greater New Bethel, finding solace and strength in the eternal truths of faith. His spirit soared with the melodic strings of his favorite hymn, "He Knows Just How Much We Can Bare."

As the sun set on March 11, 2024, at 10:29 p.m., Heaven opened its gates, welcoming a loyal soldier with the words, "Well done, thy good and faithful servant." Though George may have departed this earthly realm, his memory lives on in the hearts of all those touched by his gentle spirit.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Linda, his beloved daughters, Giorgina and Eunicia, and a treasured family circle, including five brothers, three preceding him in death:  Ulysses (Doris) Baker, Henry (Maymie) Baker and Frank Baker, along with two surviving brothers: Lindsey (Barbara) Baker and Wayne (Dorothy) Baker; three God-children:  Cheron McKay, Kia McKay and Torrian Wilson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

In the quiet corners of his home, George's beloved dog, Tyler, and his grand-dogs, Jackson and Maxwell Baker, find solace in his enduring love and presence, a testament to the profound impact of his gentle spirit.

As we bid farewell to a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and confidant, let us take solace in the knowledge that Deacon George Michael Baker's legacy of love, wisdom, laughter and unwavering faith will continue to illuminate our lives for generations to come.
