Harvey Lee
Outler
Sep 29, 1937 — Jan 10, 2025
Harvey Lee Outler, Jr. was born September 29, 1939, in Mount Vernon, Georgia to Harvey Lee Outler
and Lilly Outler. He was one of three children born to this union.
As a young boy, Harvey's family moved out of town to the rural areas to farm. His father and his
siblings planted and grew vegetables for the owner of this land. His mother was a domestic worker and
was the best cook Harvey knew. He would often brag that his sweet potato pie was so good because he
used her recipe. Harvey had fond memories of life on the farm having only one regret... he did not learn
to swim and as a child he could only witness the loss of his sister and her best friend in a pond on the
farm.
Harvey's only child was born in Glenwood, Georgia. Nelly McRae Lavalle gave birth to their daughter,
Debra Ann McRae Anderson. Harvey remained in contact with his daughter throughout her life. Both
Nelly and Debra Ann preceded Harvey in death. Debra Ann had two sons, Marvis and Jarvis Anderson.
Marvis preceded his mom in death. She had a son Edward Anderson Jr. and daughter Lisa Barwick.
Harvey relocated from Georgia to Miami, Florida. For 35 years, he was an honest and faithful
commercial truck driver. He would tell the story of having missed only one day of work. This was
when he had sustained a severe cut to his hand. Even then, he had to be coerced to go to the doctor.
Harvey loved fishing and took advantage of Miami& many water resources to enjoy his hobby. He was
a generous man and would often share what he caught with others. Harvey also loved working on
automobiles. His last truck could always be found sitting under the garage in prime shape. Though he
was unable to drive in his last years of life, he always assured us it was drivable. In his later years, he
loved looking at sports and cowboy movies on television. Yes, Gunsmoke and those cowboy movies
were made decades ago, but he watched them as if they were new. His favorite sport to watch was
baseball. He was able to enjoy watching his favorite team, the Dodgers play.
In Miami, many of God promises in Harry life were fulfilled. Psalm 18: 23, he who findeth the wife
findeth a good thing and findeth favor from the Lord.... Indeed, God showed Harvey favor when he
wed the love of his life, Rena May Bennett in 1983. Rena was a fun loving and vivacious woman. She
worked for the Miami-Dade County School Board. She had a daughter, Betty Porter, and a son, Paul
Woodbury, Jr. from her previous marriages and Harvey loved them as his own. She brought a strong
relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into their relationship. She shared this love with all
she met, becoming a mother on the mother board of the Gamble Memorial Church of God in Christ.
Rena was a prayer warrior. Harvey would often testify that while being hospitalized for months, Rena
and the Saints of Gramble Memorial met regularly at his bedside, praying for him. When the medical
staff had given up and were sending him to a nursing home, the sunlight hit his face, and he came out of
a coma. He did not have any brain damage. He lived many decades after this illness. He praised the
Lord for hearing their prayers. He and Rena lived together on 83rd Street in their purple house for
many years until she developed dementia and was quietly stolen from Harvey by her daughter, who
moved her to Georgia, where she was loved by her daughter. Unable to speak to or see the love of his
life at the end of their walk on earth was very difficult... but God.
On January 10, 2025, at the age of 87, Harvey accepted his new address and followed the path we all
must travel.
