Obituary

Mr. Jeffrey Trenton Bush was born on March 23, 1971, to Mr. and Mrs. James and Henrietta Bush at Jackson Central Hospital in Miami, FL.- the baby boy of nine children. During childhood, his father taught him and his brothers- Gary, Chuck (AKA Clean), and the late Herman- to fish. His late brother, Herman, instilled the spirit of bravery in him at an early age by encouraging him to jump off the railroad tracks into the Perrine Canal. Jeffrey was always there- excited to learn.

In 1979, their family moved to Allapattah, FL, where Jeffrey was baptized at Morning Glory Pentecostal Church. His parents ensured that he knew Christ from an early age by attending weekly church services at Ella Drama Church in Miami, Florida. In addition to biblical studies, Jeffrey attended Miami Jackson Senior High School, where his fondest memory was his Home Economics course. In this class, Jeffrey learned to cook various meals and desserts. He also delivered food to the classrooms of teachers who could not make it to the cafeteria for lunch. After passing the course, Jeffrey accepted a federal position at the Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital in Miami, FL at age 16- his first job and the launch of his career in the Food and Nutrition Services Industry. After graduating with his High School Diploma in June 1990, he continued working in various capacities at the VA for 26 years. He was a tray passer, docker, stocker, and snack passer; he washed dishes, trays, counters, and walls, and mopped/swept the floors. In 2006, Jeffrey received an award from the VA for saving the life of a choking patient by dislodging a grape using the Heimlich Maneuver. The story was featured in the VA Newspaper. He was heralded by his supervisor, Mr. Bill Neily, and several media reporters for his bravery. He was named a hero at the VA.

One day at work, Jeffrey noticed and approached a tearful, battered woman to offer consolation- Leatha Sherill. When Leatha asked his intentions, he responded, "God sent me to you. Are you hungry?". He invited her to the hospital chapel to pray. To Leatha's surprise, he kneeled down to pray with her. Unguarded, she uncovered her battered arms- he immediately gave her a heartfelt hug and gentle forehead kiss. Leatha fell in love with him. Later, Jeffrey and Leatha joined in Holy Matrimony, enjoying each other's company by the beach, movies, and at Bayside with affectionate nicknames: 6 '2 (Jeffrey) and Baby Cake (Leatha). Jeffrey and Leatha's union was a blessing to others. He started working at the Miami-Dade County School Board as a dishwasher, chef assistant, and kitchen manager. He also served the Miami-Dade County District 9 Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee. Further, he and Leatha operated a 501C(3) non-profit organization- Survivors Affected by Violence- for which he served as Director. Together, they led peace walks to end gun violence, advised parents of gun violence victims, and fed countless families. They earned several awards for their tireless efforts, including the Award for Black History Leadership in Miami, FL, and the South Miami Dade Arts and Power Award.

At the end of his life, Jeffrey thanked his parents for the rearing he received and for showing him the Lord. During his final hospital stay, he called his siblings to tell them that he loved them.

On Sunday, February 9, 2025, at 2:15 PM, with a gentle touch, God whispered, "Job well done, my good and faithful servant," and welcomed Jeffrey back home.
