Obituary

Latoya, a dedicated law enforcement officer, loving mother of one, cherished daughter, caring sister, motherly aunt, and loyal friend, left us on December 22, 2023, at the age of 39. She passed away peacefully at 8:17 pm surrounded by her family, leaving behind a legacy of honor, courage, and brute strength.

Born on January 9, 1984, Latoya was raised in Miami, Florida by Kimberly Brooks and Anthony Sweeting. Latoya attended Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School; however, she received her Diploma from American Academy High School.

After graduation Latoya joined the Department of Corrections by completing Corrections Academy in January of 2006. After ending her employment as a State Corrections Officer, Latoya continued to excel by working at the Juvenile Assessment Center. In October of 2008 moving on to excel as a Detention Officer at Krome Service Processing Center, where she ended her career when she fell ill.

In 2019, Latoya was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. Although Latoya had been brave enough to face all kinds of difficult situations, this was her toughest battle yet. Through her toughest battle, Latoya remained determined to see it through. Latoya took on Sarcoidosis for more than 3 years before finally being diagnosed and 6 years before succumbing to her disease.

Latoya always said that the pain was hard, but the way it affected those around her was the worst part. Not only did she spend those 6 years fighting nonstop, but she also took the time to inspire, connect, and change the lives of everyone lucky enough to spend time with her.

Latoya has joined in Heaven her Great grandparents: Simon Davis and Maddy Simpkins; Grandparents: Eddie and Betty Brooks, Great uncles and aunts: Maynor Davis, Mildred Brown, and Lizzy Graham; and cousin, Charles Brooks.

Latoya lives on through her daughter Brooklyn and Fletcher Spann; her parents Anthony Sweeting and Kimberly Brooks; her siblings Anthony and Khallida, and Khambrel; Great aunts and uncles: Margaret, Eula, Earlene, Christine, and Avon; aunts and uncles Jeffery, April, Edward, Mark and Carol; her cousins: Travis, Jefferey Jr., Ashley, Ebony, Shaska, Jermaine, Corey, Ryan, Kevin Gillis, Dasheema, Taityana, Loneisha, Jada, Edward Jr., Kevin Watkins, Marrell, Jasmine, Chyna, Marquilla, Ne'Shari, Takia, Paris, Mariah, Lameka, Nevae'h, Lamaria, Jermaine Jr.,Jahari, Khalil, Elijah, Samariah, Kayden, Isaiah, Keilon, Amiri, , Karma, Lo'Reign, Kehlani and Chloe,.
