Mary Edith
Dupree
Apr 19, 1932 — Mar 11, 2024
On April 19, in Manning, South Carolina, a beacon of strength and love came into this world. Mary Edith Miller was born to James Russell and Virginia Mouzon Miller, the sixth of ten siblings, destined to become the heart and soul of her family's matriarchy.
From her early days, Mary Edith began a life with the Lord as a member of Goodwill Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her sisters, listening to 45s and dancing. She embodied the spirit of joy and togetherness going into town, watching movies and shopping. Mary Edith attended Manning Training School, which set the foundation for her lifelong commitment to imparting the importance of education to her children and ensuring they received the best opportunities possible.
On February 19, 1949, Mary Edith married Henry J. DuPree, beginning a journey of love and dedication that would span decades. Together, they welcomed ten children, nurturing them with unwavering care and instilling in them the values of hard work, determination, and resilience.
In the summer of 1964, Mary Edith and Henry made the bold decision to relocate their growing family to Miami, Florida, seeking new horizons and prospects. There, Mary's nurturing nature led her to a career as a nurse's aide, where she touched countless lives with her kindness and compassion. Yet, her true calling lay in the cherished role of grandmother and great-grandmother, which she embraced with boundless adoration and devotion upon retiring.
Mary Edith was a meticulous housekeeper and homemaker. In the heart of her home, her culinary skills were a cornerstone and she delighted in cooking and baking pies for her loved ones. Her attention to detail extended beyond the kitchen. She maintained a warm and welcoming home, surrounding her family with affection and comfort.
Mary Edith's faith journey led her to various congregations, including First Baptist Church of Brownsville, St. Matthew Freewill Baptist Church, and New Jerusalem First Missionary Baptist Church, where she found solace and community under the leadership of Reverend Michael Keith Anderson.
As the years passed, Mary Edith relocated to Georgia, where she continued to be a pillar of strength and beacon of joy. On March 11, our beloved matriarch, was called to glory. Her husband, Henry, preceded her in death, as well as sons James and Horace DuPree. Mary Edith leaves a legacy of matriarchy and love that will be treasured by bonus son Lionel (Fleda) Martin, of South Carolina, children Carolyn DuPree, Margaret (Willie) Randolph, of Georgia, Dorothy (Willie) Cook , Elizabeth DuPree (Craig Collins), Charles (Katrina) DuPree, Eugene DuPree, Calvin DuPree of Georgia, and Arthur (Caroline) DuPree; sister, Daisy Evans of Maryland; sister-in-law, Barbara DuPree; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; seven great great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though she may have departed this earthly realm, her spirit will live on eternally, guiding and comforting us in times of need. Rest in peace, dear mother, knowing that your love will endure for generations to come.
