Minnie Mae
Robinson
May 18, 1923 — Jul 27, 2024
The length of our days is seventy years-or eighty, if we have the strength." Psalm 90:10
MINNIE MAE ROBINSON was a remarkable woman who lived for over three decades beyond God's promise with an unwavering love for serving God and left an indelible mark on our hearts. Born on May 18, 1922, in the small town of Louisville, Georgia, to the late Benjamin and Lucille Thompson, little did they know that their beautiful baby girl and firstborn child was destined for such an abundant life.
Minnie's spiritual journey with faith began at an early age when she was baptized by Reverend TJ Corker. The rich history of the church where she was baptized is fascinating. Legend has it that eight individuals convened with General WW Gordon and petitioned for a parcel of the Belmont Plantation to erect a church. General Gordon granted their request, resulting in the establishment of Macedonia Baptist Church, a place of worship and a schoolhouse. Subsequently, the name was changed to Gordon Grove Baptist Church as a tribute to the General. Her humble beginnings laid the groundwork for the profound spirituality that defined her life and legacy.
At the age of twelve (12), Minnie and her family relocated from Louisville to Brunswick, Georgia. She continued her education, later married, and started a family. Her permanent move to Miami, Florida in 1950 marked a significant turning point in her life. She was filled with excitement and enthusiasm to embark on this new chapter.
Minnie became a member of the historic St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church in the heart of Overtown. She was an active and longtime member of the Usher Board and served diligently as a member of the Mission Circle and the Flower Club and later became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she was active for many years. Demonstrating a servant's heart, her passion for caring and serving others led her to pursue a career in nursing; a role she embraced with dedication and love. She was a committed and hard worker who believed in charitable giving and community service.
Minnie remarried and continued to expand her family. She worked tirelessly to ensure her children received a quality education and followed their career paths and aspirations. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and her love for them was a guiding light in her life.
Minnie attended Lindsey Hopkins Vocational School to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She was hired by Christian Hospital located in Overtown which was the first Black-owned hospital that provided medical care for black Miamians. When Christian Hospital closed, she began working at Mt. Sinai Medical Center located in Miami Beach, FL., which at the time required Blacks to register with the Miami Beach Police Department, be finger-printed, and carry an identification card which allowed Blacks to be on Miami Beach until sunset. This was a daunting experience, but she preserved and continued working as a private duty nurse for a prominent family until her retirement in 1989. Her love for nursing and caregiving also opened doors to travel, allowing her to explore places far beyond the East Coast.
Throughout her life, Minnie exuded infinite wisdom and grace, taking on the roles of a devoted mother, a loving grandmother, a cherished sister, a caring aunt, a supportive cousin, and a true friend. Her impact was not confined to her immediate family; she touched the lives of countless individuals, offering unwavering support, genuine compassion, and a listening ear to all who crossed her path. Her relentless dedication to serving others and her community made her a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration. Minnie lived her life as a true embodiment of unconditional love, with her actions and words resonating with the genuine, selfless love that transcends all bounds.
In the early morning of July 27, 2024, Minnie began her journey with the sweet voices of God's angels calling her name.
