Obituary

Norman Dwayne Lewis was born to the late Deacon Robert C. Lewis Sr and Mother Vivian Lewis on October 14, 1956, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. He was the eldest of five siblings.

Norman was educated in the Miami-Dade Public School System, receiving his high school diploma from the prestigious Miami Northwestern Senior High School Class of 1974.

After graduation, Norman enlisted in the United States Army and the Florida National Guard for eight (8) years. From 1974-1982, Norman was a Military Police Sergeant E-5.  Upon returning to Miami, Norman began his career with the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department. In this capacity, he worked with the Florida Department of Corrections, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Florida Department of Children and Families. Norman dedicated thirty years of service in the field of corrections. After retiring, he worked as a Court Security Officer at the Miami-Dade Courthouse.

Norman was immersed in the Christian faith from a young age. He was baptized at the tender age of eight, accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Overtown, then under the leadership of the late Reverend David A. Bradley. Norman continued to serve at Mt. Carmel, affectionately known as "The Mount", under the leadership of Pastor Shawn Williams. He served diligently in a dual role as an Usher and as Security for the Main Entrance of "The Mount" church.  He stood on the latter verse of Psalms 84:10: "I would rather be a Doorkeeper in the house of the Lord my God." Norman loved his church, its members, and his pastor.  Days before his passing, after Wednesday Bible Study,  Norman greeted the Pastor,  shook his hand, and told him, "I love you, Pastor".  Norman was a kind and loving man who was intentional with his actions and words, especially when it came to those he loved.

The lyrics of "From This Moment" by Shania Twain best describe the part of Norman's life when he fell in love with his wife and best friend, Kerralen. "From this moment life has begun. From this moment, you are the one. Right beside you is where I belong." It was at that moment in 1998 when Norman met the love of his life.

Today, as we remember Norman, we remember a gentle giant in stature. He was a humble, loving, and respectable man. He loved the Lord, his wife, family, and friends and looked forward to being on his Ushers post. There are so many wonderful memories of our beloved Norman - far too many to mention. These memories will linger on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.  He will be deeply missed.

On April 12, 2025,  Norman Lewis departed this life.
