Obituary

Violean Johnson, born on November 25, 1948, in Miami, Florida, was the beloved daughter of the late Maude Johnson Ferguson and Charles Evans. Raised in the historic Overtown community, affectionately known as "Good Bread Alley."  She developed a deep love for family, music, and service to others.

She was the third child of ten. Preceding her in death are her parents, Maude Johnson and Charles Evans; five maternal siblings: Maxwell Ward, Catherine Peterson, Theresa Jones, Albertha Webb, Leroy Jones; four Paternal siblings: Gloria Evans-Bain, Rayvon Evans, Randall Evans, Charles N. Evans; one great-grandson: Cevin Lazare.

A vibrant and family-oriented spirit, Violean found joy in singing, dancing, and bringing people together. In her early years, she was known as part of Overtown's version of "The Supremes, performing tunes like Baby Baby, Where Did Our Love Go?, Stop! In the Name of Love and many others alongside her cousin and best friend in talent shows and local  theaters. They earned numerous accolades for their captivating performances. When she was not on stage, she cherished time spent with her family, creating lasting memories through games, gatherings, and joyful reunions.

At the heart, she received her education in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools System. She attended Douglas Elementary School and Booker T. Washington Jr/Sr High School and graduated in 1966. She participated in many activities while in school; however, she enjoyed talent shows the most. Under the guidance of her oldest brother, she later received training as a nurse's assistant while working as a housekeeper at various hotels in the Miami area.

Because she was a young, adventurous, and vibrant young woman, she decided to take a spontaneous trip to Key West, Florida, with her sister and cousin for some fun in the sun. There she met the love of her life, Calvin Leon Thurston. They enjoyed many fond memories while commuting between the two cities. Shortly after, he decided to move to Miami, Florida, to be near his love. After dating for a few years, they decided it was time to take life's journey together, forever. On November 12, 1968, the two were joined in holy matrimony with her mother as a witness. To this union, they had 6 beautiful children.

After years of working in various hotels, she accepted a position at the Miami Heart Institute, which is now Mount Sinai Hospital, on Miami Beach. She worked there caring for patients for many years before taking maternity leave in with her last child in 1981. She later accepted a position working with her younger sister at Jackson Memorial Hospital as an assistant floor leader in housekeeping. In the mid-80s, the University of Miami Health Centers (UHealth) expanded.

She decided to join the Environmental Services Department. She remained there for several years. She decided to retire from the UHealth after the passing of her husband in 2006.

Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it…Violean accepted Christ at an early age. Being raised in the Baptist church by her mother and grandmother, she was taught the importance of having a relationship with the Lord. She accepted Christ at an early age. She became a member of Temple Baptist Church in Overtown, Florida, where she was baptized by Rev. Thompson. She enjoyed attending church with her aunts, uncles, and most of all her favorite cousins. She later renewed her membership in the latter part of 2010. She continued her fellowship after the COVID pandemic as an online visitor at New Birth Baptist Church of Miami.
